“A Centenarian,” 100 years old, and long-time Pittsburgh resident, passed away May 4, 2017 in Hardeeville, South Carolina. Inez was born September 2, 1916 in Dallas County, Alabama and at age 2, her family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Inez attended the Wilkinsburg Public Schools, graduated from Turtle Creek Union High School in Turtle Creek, PA and received a Licensed Practical Nurse Degree from Passavant Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1960. Her nursing career included working at Montefiore Hospital and VA Hospital in Pittsburgh where she retired from in 1979. In 1938, Inez met and married the late Henry Brewer, Jr. To this union two daughters were born, Sandy and Arline. In 1955, she married George Mimms, who preceded her in death.

She was a member of Homewood AME Zion Church in Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Harriet Tubman Guild until 2000 when she joined her daughter, Sandy, in Chicago, IL. In 2009, she joined her daughter, Arline in Hardeeville, SC. Inez was a lover of nature and studied butterflies, flowers and birds. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, needlepoint and gardening. Reading poetry and mystery novels were a favorite past time, too. Her memory will be cherished by her daughter, Sandra Harris; 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, one sister, Eunice “Honey” Snowden, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her daughter, Arline Farris, two brothers, Clarence and John Thomas; and two sisters, Mary Alice Snowden and LaVerne Jackson preceded her in death. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017, 1 P.M., Trolley Station Oral History Center at The Greater Pittsburgh Coliseum, 7310 Frankstown Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. Family visitation and reception immediately following service at The Coliseum.
