Can you smell what the Rock is cookin’?

Neither can I.

The New Pittsburgh Courier is cookin’ up a lot of new features, some that you’ve already seen, and others that are still in the oven.

I’m Rob Taylor, the new managing editor of the Courier. I began my duties here on April 1. I’m a Pittsburgh native, and graduated from Central Catholic High School right before Y2K was supposedly going to become the end of the world.

I then moseyed on over to THE Ohio State University in Columbus, where I began an African American publication entitled “Black Horizons,” named after Pittsburgh TV legend Chris Moore’s WQED program. I graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.

Over time, I’ve written for numerous publications, including the Dayton Daily News, Columbus Call and Post, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and the Courier. I’ve been a professional radio on-air talent in music and sports since 2003, and spent four years reporting a monthly student-athlete feature for an Ohio NBC-affiliated TV station.

Today’s world is a fast world, an impatient world, a “you-better-get-my-attention-now-or-else” world. In this new position, I’m leading the Courier’s charge to be everywhere our readers are, and to grab their attention in an instant.

We have revamped our website, newpittsburghcourier.com, to become truly focused on Black Pittsburgh. As soon as you visit our site, you’ll see local, Courier-written stories that affect and impact African Americans in our region. You’ll see stories that were in our newspaper edition, as well as breaking local news stories and features that you’ll read only on our website, so please check our website every day for the latest content!

Also, you’ll see a new section on the website entitled, “Positive Stories in Black Pittsburgh,” where we showcase, well, positive stories in our community. There’s a notion that many media outlets focus on the negative side of Black Pittsburgh. Our section will make sure that positive stories from us and by us are being told.

We now have a YouTube video page! The Courier will be covering events and issues not only in written word via our newspaper, but also via video. You’ll see, with your own eyes, what’s happening in Black Pittsburgh. You can access our YouTube page on our website, or visit http://www.youtube.com and search “New Pittsburgh Courier.”

We have upgraded our promotions and marketing department here at the Courier! In the last few weeks, we’ve given away tickets to local Pittsburghers to see comedians Katt Williams and Sinbad, White House reporter April Ryan, and just last week, tickets to see Jennifer Hudson in Downtown Pittsburgh! Please become a friend of ours on our Facebook page so that you can have access to all the different contests and giveaways we’re providing for you, our readers: http://www.facebook.com/newpittsburghcourier.

And there’s so much more to come, like an expanded religion section, a more impactful sports section, and a dedicated effort to getting all African Americans in Pittsburgh, from the youth to the adults, a chance to be featured in and exposed to the Courier.

Thank you so much for supporting and reading the Courier. I am very open to hearing from you! Suggestions, comments, complaints, story ideas, and more! My number is 412-481-8302, ext. 135.

As I always say, the New Pittsburgh Courier is more than just a newspaper. It’s the VOICE of Pittsburgh’s African American community— then, now, and forever.
