Immediately following Donald Trump’s presidential victory, many good white Americans unknowingly paraphrased corrupt Captain Louis Renault, played by Claude Rains in the classic 1942 Casablanca film, by proclaiming “We’re shocked, shocked to find that racism is going on in this country.” Well, duh!
You mean to tell me you don’t remember the racist genocide of Red people. Or the racist kidnapping, Middle Passage, enslavement, rape, torture, and lynching of Black people- as well as the racist sharecropping, convict leasing, Jim Crow, and the racist water-hosings, dog-bitings, beatings, jailings, bombings, and murders of civil rights workers. Or the racist underfunded schools. Or the racist obstacles to equal employment opportunities. Or the racist school-to-prison pipeline. Or the racist mass incarceration. Or the racist videotaped killings by cops who consistently get away with murder. Or the racist widespread condemnation of athletes who dare to respectfully protest. You mean to tell me you don’t remember the racist robbery of damn near the entire Southwest from the Brown people. You mean to tell me you don’t remember the racist exploitation of the railway-laying Yellow people.
Ever since Columbus brought European terrorism to the so-called “New World” in 1492, white folks have, at the worst, actively engaged in racism or, at the least, passively condoned it. As Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said in 1967, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” So I ask good white folks, “Why have you been so silent in the past? And why are you so shocked in the present?”
Every honest person on the entire planet will agree that Trump is not fit to be president. He is a lifelong racist, a blatant demagogue, a confessed sexual assaulter, a documented fascist, and a shameless ignoramus. And the people who voted for him are even worse because they made him possible. In fact, he is them and they are him. Here’s the breakdown: any white person who voted for him is a racist, any Black a sellout, any man a misogynist, any woman a tool, any Mexican a traitor, any Muslim an infidel, any Christian a sinner, any Catholic an anti-pontiff, any poor person a pawn, any millennial a nihilist, and any American a frighteningly potential nuclear war fatality.
Despite all that, he got about 65 percent of the white male vote, nearly 60 percent of the overall white vote, and more than 60 million votes overall. Hey America, that’s you! That speaks much worse about you than him. Actually, though, he is you and you are him. As an aside, I gotta ask the women out there why more of you voted for sexual assaulting Donald than for glass-ceiling shattering Hillary. What’s up with that?
But there’s a solution to the disease of Trump and America. It’s called “Vote & Voice.” And it’s a movement created by Avenging The Ancestors Coalition (ATAC), which can be reached at 215-552-8751. The purpose of “Vote & Voice” is to attain political revolution through electoral reform. In other words, it will follow Malcolm X’s “Ballot or Bullet” approach to substantive change. And since the bullet right now is impractical and suicidal (as well as a trick by agents provocateur), our primary weapon- along with economic self-sufficiency- is to use our voices to relentlessly demand change from all federal, state, and local elected officials. “Voice & Voice” is calling for the kind of activism similar to what was envisioned in the Black Panther Party’s “Ten Point Platform and Program.” Here’s ATAC’s “Ten Point ‘Vote & Voice’ Call To Arms”:
1. Use social media to promote pro-Black and all other progressive causes, utilizing hashtag #Vote&Voice!
2. Sign online and on-street petitions for pro-Black and all other progressive causes.
3. Call radio programs and write letters to newspapers advocating pro-Black and all other progressive causes.
4. Organize or join pro-Black and other progressive groups to make specific demands on elected officials.
5. Build coalitions by meeting with pro-Black and all other progressive organizations to coordinate specific demands on elected officials.
6. Campaign for pro-Black and all other progressive candidates or run as one yourself.
7. Organize and/or participate in on-street demonstrations.
9. Pursue revolution “by any means necessary.”
10. Support Black businesses, starting with the “Buy Black” movement sponsored by the Philadelphia Community of Leaders, which will hold a free public meeting on November 18 at 6:00 at the African American Museum, 701 Arch Street. For more info, log on to philadelphiacommunityofleaders.org or call 215-247-1545.
Oh, by the way, you white folks who claim not to be racist, who claim to be liberal or progressive or revolutionary, put up or shut up. You can put up by supporting “Vote & Voice” and you can also put up by speaking up when your co-workers tell “nigger” jokes, when your neighbors mention their gentrification plans, when your uncle condemns athletes for respectfully protesting American hypocrisy, when members of your congregation say “All Lives Matter,” when your children’s teacher lies about the founding of this country, when a cop is beating or murdering a Black person, when the Republican-controlled Congress rubber-stamps the racist agenda that led Trump and it to victory, when he nominates rabid racists and sexists during the next four years to fill any vacancies among the nine Supreme Court spots, the 179 on the Circuit Courts of Appeal, the 677 on the District Courts, the 517 on the Magistrate level, the 350 on the Bankruptcy Courts, and the nine on the Court of International Trade, when he tries to implement his national “Stop and Frisk” policy, and every single time when your silence would otherwise give racism anywhere a pass.
I close with the words of my very conscious and very cool white friend, comedian Samantha Bee, host of Full Frontal. As she stated, “In the coming days, people will be looking for someone to blame- the pollsters, the strident feminists, the Democratic party, a vengeful god. But once you dust for fingerprints, it’s pretty clear who ruined America: white people…. The Caucasian Nation showed up in droves to vote for Trump, so I don’t want to hear a… damn word about Black voter turnout. How many times do we expect Black people to build our country for us? White people, this is the worst thing we’ve ever- no, I’m sorry. That’s a very high bar…. And don’t try to distance yourself from the bad apples and say, ‘Its not my fault. I didn’t vote for him.’ Hashtag ‘Notallwhitepeople.’ If all Muslims have to take responsibility for every member of their community, so do we.”
I just dropped the mic for Sistah Samantha.
