:10—I guess we knew Kevin Durant would end up at Golden State or the Spurs. I guess we also knew he was not going back to OKC…what we don’t know is how they’re going to share the ball in the Warriors offense. I know Coach Kerr has a plan, but how do three guys that can score 40 a night co-exist with one ball??? Stay tuned.
:09—You know I’m not one to say I told you so…well, actually I am. And I told ya the Pirates would be back. All teams have a bad run. Case in point. Look at the Cubs right now.
:08—Speaking of the Cubs, your Bucs took 2 out of 3 and right now that’s worthy of pennant consideration. I still say we may not have the pitching to win a world series, but they’ll be in the race now.
:07—July 29…that’s the day boys and girls, your Pittsburgh Steelers kick off the 2016 season in search of Super Bowl #7. I for one think this will be it, but two things have to happen. Number one—everyone has to stay healthy…duh! And number two, and this is key and one step up from staying healthy, they have to keep the money makers all on the field at the same time. Big Ben, Bell, Pouncey, A.B., Heyward and whatever linebacker decides to be a star. Oh, one more thing, coaching mistakes must be reduced…I’m just saying.
:06—I forgot to mention it last week, dear Lord forgive me, but a fond remembrance of our great friend and hometown hero Armon “The Hammer” Gilliam. The legendary Connie Hawkins League, UNLV, NBA superstar who passed away much too soon July 5, 2011. We really miss you “Hammer” and the world was a much better place with you in it!!!
:05—Consider the legends who have gone and this just given my limited knowledge. Kenny “K.D.” Durrett, Maurice Lucas, Robert “Jeep” Kelly, Nathan “Sonny” Lewis, Larry “Byrd” Richardson, Darryl Gissendanner, Kenny West, Leroy “Free” Freeman, Chucky Anderson, Len “Houdini” Johnson.
:04—And speaking of that…the 40 year anniversary of the nationally recognized Connie Hawkins Pro/AM/NCAA Summer Basketball League is at hand. The celebration reunion party will be coming up soon. Come one. Come all. If you played, coached or just watched some of the greatest players of all time, come on out. Get all the final information next week in your New Pittsburgh Courier!
:03—OK, if you’re the only human being on earth that doesn’t have a clue as to who Simone Biles is…then “wake up and smell the fried chicken!” She is, in fact, quite possibly the greatest gymnast…ever. Three time World Champion and about to win Olympic gold. Oh, did I mention she’s Black? Yes!!!
:02—This is your next to the next last call. The Armon “The Hammer” Gilliam and Leroy Freeman Memorial “Hard Work” Basketball Camp. Coming up Aug. 6 and 7 at the Penn Hills YMCA. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. Includes total professional supervision, lectures, games, skills and drills, t-shirt, lunch and a lot of “hard work,” respect and love. Only $25 for the weekend. :01—Heart breaking news. Former Olympic super star and first African American figure skating champion Debi Thomas is broke and almost homeless. Additional shocking news because Ms. Thomas is also a surgeon!
:00—The 3rd Annual Pittsburgh City League High School All-Sports Hall of Fame Inductions are upcoming, Saturday, Oct. 22. You can start your call-in nominations starting now. Looking for the best of the best in city league sports history 412-628-4856.
