Fred “FU” Underwood, Family, and the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre recently presented, “Canvas of Words'” Poetry Series Pt. 1. The event took place at June 25, at 8 pm.
“We wanted to fuse art and popular culture to tell a story. We believe that no matter how young, old, Black, White, conscious, or lack thereof, that you can use a word to heal a heart. The Canvas of Words Poetry Series focuses on just that—except with a twist. People love poetry, and they love art. We just want to give the people what they want,” Fred FU Underwood said.
Auditions were held to select the poets that particioated in the event. The event consisted of giving the spotlight to poets and artists throughout the city, providing them with the opportunity to show their artistic talent.
One by one, the talent took the stage to dispay their artistry.
“We host auditions. It’s surreal because people reach out to me before I can even get the chance to advertise an audition date. We hand select each artist for each show though. He or she has to be the perfect ingredient to complete the meal,” Underwood said.
Many came out to support the event.
Event attendee Teevou Goodwin said, “I was surprised by how talented the poets were. I was so impressed, they are so talented. I enjoyed it.”
Underwood said, “What was your favorite most memorable moment of the evening? I don’t think I can decide on a favorite moment. From the second those doors opened until they closed, I lived in the moment.”
