Government accountability and minority participation advocates now have a new set of tools with which to push for both thanks to Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner, who channeled former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandies, noting, “Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants.”
“Unveiling these two tools signifies a new day in transparency into county government,” she said. “The more eyes we have on county spending, the better for the taxpayers.”
The tools, OpenGov Allegheny and County Contracts Online, are both accessible at http://www.alleghenycontroller.com and allow users to view county revenues and spending by all departments, and to access all contracts issued by all departments, and to also search them by type, vendor, amount, or total number issued. Contracts can even be searched by keyword and date range.
“You can even look up the contract for this service,” Wagner said during a demonstration at her May 26 press conference. “It was issued in November for $29,000 and has an annual cost of $24,000.”
