HERSHEY (AP)—Sheldon Jeter and Jassir Jordan each banked 22 points as Aliquippa completed a perfect season Saturday afternoon with a 68-49 victory over Mastery Charter North in the PIAA Class AA boys’ basketball title game at the GIANT Center.
The 5-foot-11 Jordan also dished out seven assists for Nick Lackovich’s Quips (30-0), who used a 15-2 run that turned a close game (33-28) into a 48-30 lead with eight seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Jordan collected the first nine points of that pivotal run, then dished to Jeter for another score as Aliquippa generated needed separation. Mastery Charter North was able to get within 14 points several times in the fourth, but no closer. Daeqwon Plowden netted 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, posting a double-double for Terrance Cook’s Mastery Charter North squad (27-4), which appeared in its first state championship game. Rodney Ross added 11 points for the Pumas.
Aliquippa’s Kaezon Pugh, the PIAA Class AA football player of the year and a Pittsburgh linebacker recruit, finished with 11 rebounds. Pugh, Jordan and 6-6 senior Chucky Humphries were starters a season ago when Aliquippa lost 62-51 to Conwell-Egan in the PIAA Class AA final. Saturday’s triumph delivered Aliquippa its first state basketball championship since 1997 and its fifth overall.
