GOLDEN GIRLS—From left: Francesca Gould, Torrie Cash, Maia Joiner, and Lexi Griggs, all seniors won their fourth old medal in Vincentian Academy’s 68-54 win over Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the WPIAL Class A championship game.

For years, coaches have been warning their players that Vincentian’s press defense can upset a game plan in a very crude way.

The Vincentian’s girls basketball team was designed to run, and they sprinted pass No.1 seeded Wuerl North Catholic Cardinals (23-3) 68-54 Saturday at Petersen Events Center.

Vincentian Academy and North Catholic have combined to win the past eight WPIAL Class A titles, the Royals winning the last four. Saturday was the schools’ fifth meeting in the WPIAL finals since 2007 and the third this season.

Kiersten Elliott led Vincentian (21-4) with 24 points. Lexi Griggs had 16 points, Torrieonna Cash and Marissa Muth both had 10 points.

Sam Breen led North Catholic with 22 points before fouling out of the game.
