State Reps. Jake Wheatley and Ed Gainey

As the Primary Election season heats up, state Reps. Jake Wheatley, D-Hill District, and Ed Gainey, D-East Liberty, have already issued defeats to their opponents, having won the endorsement of the Allegheny County Democratic Party.

Though endorsing incumbents in a presidential election year is not uncommon, it was not a forgone conclusion for Wheatley, who has had to win without the endorsement before. Not taking any chances, he submitted more than four times the 300 signatures required on his nominating petition for re-election, handing in more than 1,200.

Though he beat three opponents for the Party nomination—Jessica Wolfe, Mark Brentley and Aerion Abney they have until Aug. 1 to file as independents and oppose him in the November General Election.

Brentley, a former school board representative from the North Side, has run for the seat in the past. Wolfe, a social worker from Allentown is running for the first time.
