PITTSBURGH– James E. Taylor, Ph.D., will join UPMC as its new chief diversity and inclusion officer beginning March 14.
Dr. Taylor will lead UPMC’s efforts to continue as an employer, provider and insurer that reflects and embraces the rich diversity of the Pittsburgh region in both employment and in services. With experience in diversity and inclusion in health care, Dr. Taylor is particularly interested in advancing a diversity agenda that responds to the demography of western Pennsylvania. A native of the northeast, he is looking forward to exploring a new city that reminds him of home.

“I previously lived in two cities that many would consider transient, Charlotte, N.C., and San Francisco, so Pittsburgh’s sense of connectedness will be an exciting change,” Dr. Taylor said. “With UPMC’s size, brand, reputation and geographic footprint, I am looking forward to working with some of the brightest minds in the industry to illustrate the direct link between health care outcomes, workforce productivity and community engagement to issues of culture and diversity.”
Dr. Taylor had served as the chief learning and diversity officer of Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte. In this role, he oversaw the implementation of system-wide diversity initiatives and integrated learning strategies, which positioned Carolinas HealthCare System, an organization of 60,000 employees, as a leader in these areas.

Dr. Taylor received his undergraduate degree in applied psychology from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. He continued his studies at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Francisco, where he received his master’s degree and doctorate in organizational psychology. Dr. Taylor has been recognized for his work both within and outside of health care, as he is actively engaged in many philanthropic and community based endeavors, holding multiple board appointments and supporting numerous charitable activities.
