Kelly Mayhew traveled with her mother from Maryland to Queens, New York over the weekend to get a butt lift. Mayhew, who has had five other similar operations in the past, visited a woman in her basement home to undergo the surgery. With her mother by her side, the woman injected silicone into Mayhew, who immediately began to have trouble breathing.
As Mayhew’s mother tried to revive her daughter, the “doctor” took off in a gray SUV and fled the scene.
Mayhew was rushed to a hospital nearby, where she was pronounced dead on May 30.
“It’s very shocking,” said Trudith Johnson, a Queens resident who lives next door to the home where the procedure was done. “People shouldn’t be doing these things in the home.”
The homeowner says she rented the basement space to a woman she previously worked with.
The homeowner of the house where this all happened says the tenant in the basement apartment is a female nurse’s aide or nurse’s assistant.
The homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous, said the person who did the procedure is someone else, who may not have any medical training.
“There’s no doctor over there,” Johnson said. She said she’s surprised anyone would go to the house for a medical procedure.
BET Networks released a statement about Mayhew, who worked there as a freelancer.
“We are saddened by the death of our colleague and friend Kelly Mayhew. Our hearts go out to her family and we extend our deepest sympathies for their loss.”
An autopsy will be performed to find out the official cause of death in the incident. Police are still searching for leads.
