As part of the of the Pittsburgh Pirates opening day series versus the Detroit Tigers April 13-15 at PNC Park, Major League Baseball and the Pittsburgh Pirates again honored African American baseball great, the late Jackie Robinson and the contributions that he made to Major League Baseball.
According figures and info provided by Chaz Kellem, manager of Diversity Initiatives for the Pirates, the ball club received over 3, 855 entires for the 2015 competition. There were 973 submissions for the art category, 2,011 essay submissions, 871 poems were entered. Individual schools submitted 140 entries and teachers submitted 224 entries. The entries were submitted from 3 states; Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Kellem also reported that there were approx. Eight hundred youth that attended the game.
As part of the pregame festivities Pirates President Frank Coonelley presented Emerald Electrical Services with the 9th Annual Jackie Robinson “MVDBP” (Most Valuable Diverse Business Partner) Award. Accepting the award were, Deborah Morehead, Curtis Morehead and son Brockton Morehead.
