PITTSBURGH (AP) – Public schools in the city of Pittsburgh will be closed Thursday with arctic cold expected to descend on the commonwealth.

The Pittsburgh Public School system posted word of the closure on its Twitter feed Wednesday afternoon, citing expected cold and wind chill.

Superintendent Linda Lane urged students to “Read something about Black History tomorrow to celebrate Black History Month!”

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory from 1 a.m. Thursday and noon Friday for many western Pennsylvania counties.

Forecasters say they expect temperatures of 11 below to 6 above zero and wind chills of 10 to 24 below zero.
