The Adult Swim cable channel has announced that it has given the go-ahead to “Black Jesus,” a new scripted series from the creator of “The Boondocks,” Aaron McGruder. The half-hour live action comedy is scheduled to air later this year.

The show features Gerald “Slink” Johnson playing Jesus on a mission to bring joy and kindness in present-day Compton, CA. The series also stars Charlie Murphy, Corey Holcomb and John Witherspoon. McGruder also serves as executive producer with Mike Clattenburg as director.

“The Boondocks” will return for a fourth season on Adult Swim on April 21.
