PITTSBURGH (AP) – A man charged in a hostage situation in a downtown Pittsburgh office building is facing new charges in an alleged assault on another inmate at a western Pennsylvania prison.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ( ) says authorities in Allegheny County allege that 23-year-old Klein Thaxton of McKeesport fashioned a knife and a rope and began beating another inmate June 26 at the county jail before three other inmates intervened. The other inmate wasn’t seriously injured but said he believed Thaxton was trying to kill him.

Thaxton was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and terroristic threats after authorities allege that he took a financial services firm owner hostage in September. A defense lawyer said Thaxton is mentally ill and was off his medication. His attorney declined comment on the new charges.
