EDINBORO, Pa.—Edinboro swept the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Player of the Week awards following Saturday’s 30-20 win at Mercyhurst. Freshman Devin Ghafoor from Perry Traditional Academy was selected the Defensive Player of the Week Tailback while Brian Davis from East Amherst, NY was named the Offensive Player of the Week. The Fighting Scots snapped a two-game losing streak with the win and improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC West.

Devin Ghafoor

The duo accounted for all four of Edinboro’s touchdowns. Davis scored the first three, all on two-yard runs. The 5’10”, 205 lb. senior fell just shy of his second career 100-yard day, finishing with 96 yards on 22 carries. He was particularly effective in the first half when he gained 80 yards and scored all three of his touchdowns.

Davis’ final score was the result of the first of a pair of big plays by Ghafoor. The nickel back intercepted a pass intended for Mercyhurst standout Trevor Kennedy and returned it eight yards to the Mercyhurst 41. Davis carried on three of the next five plays, the final carry accounting for his third two-yard TD run and a 20-7 lead.

Ghafoor, a 6’0”, 167 lb. freshman, gave Edinboro a 27-7 lead with 4:34 left in the third quarter. He deflected a lateral, then picked it up and carried it the rest of the way for a 49-yard fumble return for a touchdown. It represented the freshman’s first career touchdown.

Ghafoor finished with three tackles on the day, plus the interception and the fumble caused and returned for a touchdown. He helped key a Boro defense which allowed just 275 yards and forced three turnovers.

Edinboro is back in action on Oct. 22 hosting Clarion in a 6 p.m. kickoff.
