The Professionalism and Discipleship of Truth recognition ceremony, which was held last month at the Wyndham Hotel in Oakland and hosted by community activist and New Pittsburgh Courier columnist Louis “Hop” Kendrick, recognized people in the community who exemplify unique qualities and excel in their careers and their church.

Kendrick said the event was held because too often the same people are recognized and those individuals who are changing the lives of people in the Black community on a regular basis are missed and he thought something different was needed. He said Robert Lavelle was the inspiration for the event, because this was a man who excelled in business and remained active in the church while still following the teaching of Christ. He set an example in both worlds—business and spiritual.
