Doesn’t it seem like we were just making plans for the year 2000 New Year‘s Eve? How fast the 10 years has passed. A few of the people we lost in the past 10 years include: Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Barry White, Eartha Kitt, Lena Horne, Gerald Lavert and Ed Bradley.
Monique, Halle and Denzel were awarded Oscars and “For Colored Girls,” the chore poem, has been made into a movie. Tyler Perry has totally blown up and Atlanta is one of THE hot spots for movies, music and the home of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. TRHA is one of the most popular shows in the housewives franchise.
Reality television has taken over the airwaves. We are watching so-called regular people do everything from dancing with the stars to bidding on the contents of an over due storage locker. The later must have been inspired by the show Hoarders, the over flow has to be kept somewhere.
The last decade delivered our first president with African roots and an inauguration like no other. What a decade this has been. What plans are you making for the next 10 years?
This is the time of year for a barrage of infomercials promising a new life if you just send in four easy payments of $29.99. You can have a new body, new face, new hair or a new career if you just make a call. Remember the “if it’s too good to be true rule” and change the channel.
Many of you who read this column are like me, a part of the baby boomer generation and we have to hold on to our cash. If you haven’t retired already, I’m sure you are planning to retire within the next decade. If you’re like a lot of us, you are still saving for your retirement. There is still time to make contributions to your retirement accounts. If you are turning 50 in the year 2011 or 2012 you can make an additional pre-tax contribution of up to $5,500, these payments are called catch up payments. Take some time and do a search on 401K catch up payments for a clear understanding.
While you are surfing the net stop by Legalzoom.com. Have you penned a will? I know this is something we don’t think about, but do you want your valuables to fall into the hands of the wrong person?
Things that make you go hmmm. How is your health? Do we need to lose that 10 pounds that Dr. Oz talks about? I say yes to that. What is the status of your bucket list? You know those things you want to do before you kick the bucket. Where do you want to go that you have not been? Where would you like to live that you have not lived? Do you want to visit all 50 states? I would like to own another dog and another sports car. I want to write a book or two and start a scholarship in my name while I can see the person receive it. You don’t have to wait until the first of the year to set some goals, get started right now and by the way it is ok to change your mind. Make this the decade to do you.
Have a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
