A massive crowd came out Aug. 9 to celebrate the grand opening of the Rivers Casino. We asked Pittsburghers what they thought of the new gambling establishment. Here’s what you said:

“The bad outweighs the little bit of good. They’re bringing a few jobs to the community but bringing a lot more harm with gambling addictions. They make their money from people being addicted and I really can’t agree with that.”
Phyllis Y. Nettles
East Liberty
Behavior health specialist

“I’m afraid. I don’t know if it’s going to be good for the surrounding communities. I work in social services and am worried about the families. Now they have another evil to battle close to home.”
Simone Benning
Social worker

“If it is going to be destructive, I don’t want it here. I don’t want to see the destruction. You know it is coming. People will lose their homes.”
Laura Thomas
North Side

“I think the North Side is becoming polluted with buildings; it looks junky. I think there are other places they could’ve put the casino. Now that it has been added, crime is going to escalate.”
Marchelle Brown
North Versailles

“I’m glad we have something like that here. Everyone won’t have to travel so far. It’ll bring money to the area and benefit quite a few people. It keeps the money here instead of everyone going out of town and taking it to those places. We can help ourselves.”
Marian Jackson

“I have mixed feelings. I think its going to bring a lot of jobs to the city but I also think that it may boost our crime in that area. The city needs to make a conscious effort to do what needs to be done to keep the area safe.”
Quiana Rash
Security officer
