Labelle, Latifah honorees of Black Girls Rock!

Black Girls Rock! founder Beverly Bond announced the show’s honorees in a statement Monday. Other honorees include tennis champion Venus Williams, screenwriter-producer Mara Brock Akil, ballet dancer Misty Copeland, community organizer Ameena Matthews and children’s rights advocate Marian Wright Edelman.

Serena, the younger of the two, still holds a spot at the top of the game. Venus has not been there for quite some time.

Venus Williams, one of many diagnosed with the disease is among the many women working to expose the general public to it. Locally Sandy Burkett is heading a campaign to educate the community.
