Hurdle was a runaway winner, selected first on 25 of 30 ballots from a Baseball Writers’ Association of America panel. Don Mattingly of the Los Angeles Dodgers came in second and Fredi Gonzalez of the Atlanta Braves finished third.

Sgt. John Fisher says police broke up an argument involving Dallas Latos and other Cincinnati and Pirates fans at a bar inside PNC Park during the Pirates’ 6-2 win Tuesday night.

Pirates beat Reds 4-2, wait for wild card rematch

Jordy Mercer had a triple and an inside-the-park homer, and the Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds with a 4-2 victory Sunday that was mostly an afterthought for teams looking ahead to a rematch in Pittsburgh.

After a 21-year absence, the Pirates clinched at least a National League wild card Monday night when they beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 and the Washington Nationals lost to St. Louis. Now, they can turn their attention toward bigger goals, the kind that seemed like nothing more than a pipe dream through all those losing seasons.
