Black business owners hanging out with Connie Portis at Savoy Restaurant in the Strip District. Last week I visited Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland, Kenny’s Place in Uptown Pittsburgh, Tim’s Bar in the Hill District and Savoy Restaurant in the Strip District. My first stop was at Tim’s Bar in the Hill District where I celebrated my birthday with family and friends and we had a great time. Thanks to everyone that came out for my birthday.

Stewart) This time last year in Pittsburgh (July 2012), now disgraced Nate Harper was still our highly respected African-American chief of police, the Mellon Arena had just finished being completely demolished after standing for 40 years as a reminder of the displacement of numerous businesses and families from the Lower Hill District, and 32-year-old Mayor Luke Ravensthal was still looking forward to yet another four year term as the mayor of the Most Livable City.
MOVER AND SHAKER – Justin Strong at Ava’s Brazillian Carnival in 2012 On June 10, Justin Strong, owner of AVA Bar & Lounge, announced he would be closing the second of his two venues, originally housed side by side near the corner of South Highland Ave. and East Liberty Blvd. His first venue, Shadow Lounge, was a staple of East Liberty for more than a decade before it closed this March.
