Gateway boys making a name as WPIAL powerhouse

by Malik Vincent
For New Pittsburgh Courier

Even though Section 2 of the WPIAL Class AAAA conference is filledwith some of the region’s best athletic talent, Gateway, an undefeated 6-0, refuse to sell themselves short in any way.

With three players that are 6-foot-5 and taller, the Gateway boys basketball team features one of Western  PA’s tallest starting lineups.

Similar to the Boston Celtics--before Rajon Rondo pushed himself into the equation--Gateway has a trio of players that they refer to as their ‘big three’.

Clairton rallies to claim 2nd straight Class 2A title

At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Desimon Green is a large human being.

But his game time presence for Clairton over the course of the past football season—according to its coach, Tim Nola, has been even larger at times.

Ironically, it was not a one-man show when Clairton (16-0) climbed back from being down 24 points in the first half and rallying to claim their second consecutive Class AA PIAA football championship, 36-30, at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey.

‘Bad’ wheel(s) of fortune

I am perplexed. For a week after the Chicago Bears were smacked down by the Green Bay Packers in route to claiming the NFC Championship, the chatter was not about the “Pack’s” upcoming matchup against the AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Jaws were “swollen” over the heart, or the lack of heart, of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. Hey, whatever the reason was that he departed from the most important game for the Bears in over two decades; well, that was between God, his head coach (Lovie Smith), his teammates, the nearest light post and finally his conscience. Whatever happened to the premise of “to the victor goes the spoils?”
