Allderdice, Westinghouse dominate All-City Team

Once again it was Allderdice (14-0) and Westinghouse (12-2) battling it out for the City League Girls championship this season and as a result they dominated the All-City Team selections.

Ten of the 15 players on this years’ team were on last seasons’ team, with Janay Bottoms, Taylor Smith, Roishay Woods and Lanise Saunders all repeating as First Team selections.

Much like the boys Bottoms repeated as Most Valuable Player with her teammate Lanise Saunders finishing a close second.

Allderdice made it a clean sweep with Dave Walchesky winning the Coach of the Year Award, beating out Phyllis Jones. They were the only two coaches who received votes.

Unlike the boys that only had two teams with winning records, the girls had four with Brashear finishing even at 7-7. Obama should be a major force next season with a solid group of middle school players coming up to join the current players who finished behind Allderdice and Westinghouse with a 9-5 record. Langley, which will be closing next season, had a surprising 8-6 record, and 14-7 overall.

Allderdice had 6 players make the team while Westinghouse had 4, and Obama and Brashear each had 2.

The closing of Oliver will be a blessing as far as Girls Basketball is concern, in that they have had the worst record by far over the past few seasons. This year they continued to be the worst with a 0-14 League record and 0-17 overall.

Allderdice on the other hand appeared to have a team talented enough to make some noise at the state level but was eliminated early. With all the problems at Westinghouse it’s amazing how Jones is still able to put a superior team on the floor every year which is a testament to her coaching skills. With both teams losing key players this year, it may be extremely hard for them to compete with Obama next season with their crack middle school champions moving up to varsity.

Congratulations to all the players on the New Pittsburgh Courier’s 2012 All-City Girls Basketball Team.
