Led by Dr. Walter J. Turnbull, who started the group in 1968, the Boys Choir of Harlem sang at the White House for nearly every president since Lyndon B. Johnson, and it was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Bill Clinton. But it did not survive long enough to perform for the country’s first Black president.

What happened to this internationally acclaimed choir? For more than three decades, they sang Mozart in Latin, Bach in German and Cole Porter and Stevie Wonder in English, from Alice Tully Hall in New York to Royal Albert Hall in London.

THE BOYS CHOIR OF HARLEM

The choir’s last official performance was in 2007, around the time of the death of its founder,  Turnbull. But no one ever announced that it was gone. Board members and alumni had hoped to revive it, but according to a New York Times article they acknowledged that they had not had any success.

CHICAGO (NNPA)—The U.S. Census Bureau has kicked off a national schools campaign at King College Preparatory High School to get more students involved in the upcoming census. The goal is to have the Census in Schools program reach 56 million school-age students in 118,000 schools nationally.

Stanley Moore, regional director for the U.S. Census Bureau, Alderman Toni Preckwinkle, and other community and civic leaders, joined Mayor Richard M. Daley as he expressed the importance of student    involvement.

ADORATION—The Adoration Youth and Young Adult choir, under the direction and leadership of Minister Crystal R. Manker of Northside Institutional COGIC operating from their temporary home at 2235 Federal Street on the North Side, presented their eighth annual concert entitled “Cry Out” at Trinity AMEZ Church last month. To ignite efforts in making Point Park University more culturally aware and socially diverse, the Black Student Union hosted its annual Soul Food Social: Jazz Classic Dec. 2 in the Point Park University Ballroom.

The event provided music, food, and a program that helped the Black Student Union advertise its plans to the larger community. It also highlighted the sounds of jazz. The keynote speaker for the evening was UPMC Chief Diversity Officer Candi Castleberry-Singleton, who talked about the advantages and benefits of diversity and inclusion in today’s society.

JAZZ DIVA—Patte Terrell, “The Jazz Diva,” gave a great performance throughout the night.
