EMBRACING OUR LEGACY—Nellie Mells, left, is the small business liaison for Bechtel in Monroeville, with her granddaughter, Ashley Whigham, a Junior at Oakland Catholic High School.  Ashley shadowed her “Nana” on a trip to the Department of Energy Small Business Conference in Long Beach, Calif. During the conference, Ashley attended meetings and gained a greater understanding of the work that her grandmother does to ensure that disadvantaged minority-, women- and veteran-owned small businesses are afforded the opportunity to bid on government contracts.
