Commentary...Health care headed to court

The Senate made history by passing legislation that would overhaul the nation’s health insurance system. Though the bill still has to be merged with the one the House passed in November before it can be signed into law by President Obama, this current crop of legislators has come farther than any other in working to make sure Americans have needed health care coverage.  The legislation, however, may not see the light of day if some states have their way.

To Be Equal...Coalition calls for accurate census count

(NNPA)—As we make our lists and check them twice this holiday season, we are reminded that on April 1, many of the essential “gifts” of democracy will be determined by our participation in the 2010 Census. A complete and accurate census count will ensure that your state and community get their fair share of congressional seats, community services and the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funding. But the undercounting of African-Americans in recent years has short-changed hard-pressed communities of color.

Commentary...Devastating, yet distinguished decade

(NNPA)—As we approach the end of the first 10 years of the 21st century, it is useful to remember the legal lows and historic highs of the past decade for the policy interests of Black people in America. My father’s advice to me is still applicable: “Do not forget your Egypt.”
What my father meant was that no matter how high you ascend, do not lose memory of from whence you came. His lesson to me is timely for African-Americans today.

It is literally time to stand and be counted

(NNPA)—The greatest civil rights leader in history taught each and every one of us invaluable lessons throughout his short time on earth. Absorbing his teachings, readings and speeches, we have been able to peacefully highlight injustice whenever and wherever we see it, and demand equality in a forthright and sustainable way.

As a student of Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent methods, I have witnessed the incomparable results of structured demonstrations and organized intellectual objection. All of us—Blacks, Browns, Whites and everything in between—have been blessed to see many of Dr. King’s dreams come to fruition.
