President Obama’s ‘trickle down’ economic program

(NNPA)—Barack Obama sent a disturbing message to Black America last week: If you’re looking for the president to address the special needs of African-Americans, you should start looking elsewhere.

Taking a page from Ronald Reagan’s failed trickle-down economic theory, President Obama made it clear that he has a double standard—one of Blacks and one for other powerful interest groups.

He said in a joint interview with USA Today and the Detroit Free Press, “The most important thing I can do for the African-American community is the same thing I can do for the American community, period, and that is to get the economy going again and get people hiring again.”

If you care about your little princess, don’t take her to see this ‘Frog’

(REAL TIMES MEDIA)—I am a huge fan of Disney films. Being a child of the 1980s I grew up during Disney’s dark ages and yet I still consider their obscure animated films like “The Fox and the Hound” and “The Great Mouse Detective” to be two of my favorite kids films. Of course, I’m not a kid anymore, and consequently, I can’t in good consciousness just buy into everything that Disney is doing because I see commercials on television. Which is why I’m not going to see “The Princess and the Frog” and neither should you.

Obama rejects special needs of Black community

(NNPA)—It was somewhat painful to write the above headline, since I, along with 16 million Blacks who voted for Barack Obama did so, partly on the strength of the belief that he would indeed understand and take seriously the needs of the Black community. Such headlines are sweeping the country depicting his response to the Congressional Black Caucus’s challenge to his economic policies.

Last month Rep. Maxine Waters (Calif.) led 10 of her CBC colleagues to vote against the Financial Services Bill coming out of committee. Their opposition was based on the clamor from heads of a large segment of the Black economy—auto dealers, bankers, accountants, businesspersons, broadcasters and others who cannot get credit from banks and financial agencies—even those owned by the U.S. government—and are facing disaster.

Too many in college?

(NNPA)—A week or so ago, I had the privilege of participating in a conversation on NPR about college attendance. Sparked by a conversation in the Chronicle of Higher Education, a group of “experts” were opining that too many people are going to college. Too many? Conservative and racially biased Charles Murray (author of “The Bell Curve”) thinks that too few high school students have the cognition to successfully navigate college attendance. Marty Nemko says it is a cost-benefit thing. Sandy Baum says that everyone should have opportunity and access.

Nobody mentions race, but I think it is the elephant in the room. Too many White folks are opining that too many people go to college, but their kids are in college. So do they really mean that too many Black folks go to college? Are their objections really about reinforcing a class system?

The Sarah Palin thing

If indeed former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is the joke the new left claims her to be, one wonders why they don’t simply ignore her. On the contrary, they devote an unusual amount of energy into making her the butt of their jokes and seeking every opportunity to discredit her and cover her with political dirt. The Associated Press for example assigned 11 reporters to fact-check her new book “Going Rogue.” The AP assigned exactly two reporters to read through the more than 4,000 pages of the Obama health care bills. So much attention seems to belie the new left’s claims that Palin is a lightweight—not worthy of our respect or attention.
