Increase welfare support

The current economic crisis has prompted legislators on both sides of the political aisle to consider ways to support the nation’s middle class through the financial downturn. But who is thinking about the nation’s poor?

GregMathisbox

Heralded by a Republican controlled Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton, the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act moved millions of people off welfare rolls and into jobs. Unfortunately, most of these jobs were low-skilled positions that paid less than sustainable wages. The bill did provide for job training, child care and transportation needs but the allowances under the now state-run programs didn’t take into account the true needs of those who may have spent years on welfare, were under-educated and lacked viable job skills.

Education is a civil right

The NAACP is a civil rights organization. It always has been and always will be the nation’s oldest and boldest fighter for freedom and justice the “American way,” or so they say.

How many of us really believe and understand that education is a civil right? How many of us know that a quality education is not something that is allotted to a select few, but is the right of all students? We all know that we live in a society that has come too far from Little Rock, Brown vs. the Board of Education, segregated schools, busing and all the other horror stories we were involved in while simply seeking a quality education to be turned back now. We didn’t demand to be treated differently from anyone else. We just wanted to be treated equal and be afforded the same educational opportunities as everyone else. However, in 2010, we find that we are, once again, faced with a crisis in our schools. Our educational system is flawed when it comes to fair treatment for our children.

A good start for Obama, but much more to do

(NNPA)—After one year in office, America’s first Blackberry president has found that in the age of tweeting, texting and daily polling, there is no shortage of those eager to judge his performance based on fragments of information that may not always be accurate. We will resist the urge to join the fray. No grades from me for Mr. Obama. But that does not mean we have no opinion on his first year as president.

Mr. President, you are blocking the sun

It is said that when Alexander the Great visited the philosopher Diogenes he asked the wise man if there was anything he could do for him. Diogenes is said to have replied, “Yes. Stand a little less between me and the sun.”

I thought of Diogenes as I read portions of the president’s speech from Cleveland, Ohio. The New York Times reports that the president used the word fight or some version of it more than 20 times.

Editorial...Justices’ decision hurts democracy

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 last week that the government may not restrict political spending by corporations in candidate elections.

The ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission allows corporations, labor unions and advocacy groups to buy ads that explicitly try to sway voters. The ruling allows corporations to spend freely to support or oppose candidates.
