In the news

Listening and watching the news is better than fiction; it is full of things that make you go hmmmm.
The recent debate over the number of days that mail will be delivered has me concerned.
I like to receive mail every day. I’m sure I’m not the only person that feels this way. There is just something about looking in that box and finding magazines, letters and yes, even that unwanted bill.
Many people don’t remember this but way back when, during the Christmas holiday, mail was delivered twice in one day.

Celebrating Gwen’s Girls
Written by Debbie Norrell
The invite in a beautiful shade of purple, Gwen’s favorite color, simply stated “One Girl In One Neighborhood, With One Chance to get it right.”
On Feb. 20, supporters of Gwen’s Girls were invited to recognize the accomplishments of Gwen’s Girls Inc., a gender specific agency founded by the late Pittsburgh Police Commander Gwendolyn Elliott.

From the very beginning, Elliot was destined to be a champion for women and girls. She began to break down barriers for women as early as 1964, when she entered the male-dominated military. She continued to break barriers when she became one of the first African-American female police officers in 1973—and eventually became the first woman promoted to sergeant and, ultimately, commander.

AME conference held in Clairton moves toward excellence, community
Written by Genea Webb
Moving toward Christian excellence in service was the theme of the 143rd session of the Allegheny Scranton District Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The 23 churches from Pittsburgh and other communities converged on Clairton, the City of Prayer, to convene and worship together.
“It was a time of learning and to find out what AME worship is all about,” said Rev. Dr. Judith C. Moore, pastor of First AME Church in Clairton where the three-day event was held. The conference had not been held at First AME in more than 20 years, according to Moore.
