Christmas is one of my favorite holidays; I love to decorate and shop. I try to begin decorating the day or weekend after Thanksgiving and try to put something in each room. I spread my Black Santas throughout the house and I’ve added my own personal Christmas tree in my bedroom. With so many decorations often they don’t come down until February.
I’ve noticed that Black Santas are harder to find. I spotted one the other day that I hope will be marked down by Dec. 25. My shopping isn’t quite finished but I’m getting there. When I shop for others I always seem to find more things for myself. Shopping is such a joy.
If you have some down time from your regular life during the holidays, have a few friends over, this is the perfect time of year to reconnect with friends and family. You don’t have to have anything formal. What about having a dessert party where each person brings a dessert and you serve the eggnog and coffee.
One thing I’ve been dying to do is have a dollar store party. This would be a party where everything and I mean everything is purchased from the dollar store. Come up with a crazy theme and enjoy the time with friends. One of the best times that I had at a holiday party was one hosted by a former co-worker; she introduced me to the White Elephant game. The people that came to the party really got into the spirit of the game and brought items that they did not want to trade in the game. As always there are a few good gifts to encourage people to trade and snatch gifts from each other. It was a blast. I highly suggest this game. If you don’t know the rules, Google it.
This is also the time of year when it is important to give. I’m involved in a toy drive and I’ve enjoyed buying toys for the children. I’m also participating in a “Smiles for Seniors” program. At work we have adopted a nursing home and we have received a list of first names and what they would like for a gift. We pick names and purchase the gift and then many of us bake treats for the seniors. We actually go to the nursing home and present the gifts and the sweet treats, a few co-workers are blessed with beautiful voices and they sing Christmas carols. The seniors just love this and they look forward to our return each year. We try to go to different nursing homes to spread the love.
This holiday season find something that brings you joy. It may be shopping, entertaining or baking, but remember life is short so enjoy it to the fullest. Take care of your health, don’t over eat, sample a little of everything remember the first few bites taste the best. The weight is harder to shake as we get older so eat less and move more.
I would like to thank you for reading the New Pittsburgh Courier and especially my column. Have a wonderful holiday.
