Disappearance of Black political power brokers
Category: Opinion Written by Louis 'Hop' Kendrick
There was a period of time when there were a limited number of Black men who were elected to the position of ward chairman and they had real, genuine influence.
In the fifth ward when the Republicans were in power, a Black man, Earl Sams, was the man Downtown with influence.
In 1936 when the Democrats came to power, Robert “Pappy” Williams became the most powerful Black in the party and was the driving force to elect the first Black legislator from this part of Pennsylvania. The man was Homer S. Brown, who eventually, through the effort of Pappy Williams, became the first Black judge in Allegheny County.

35 of 50 homicides Black lives
Category: Metro Written by Ashley N. Johnson
The month of July has a trend of being a month with one of the highest totals in homicides, but not since 2008 when there were 20 homicides in July, has the month had a number as high as this year’s with 12 homicides. In 2009 there were only eight homicides. More than half of the list are Black and Black men. And what is worse is that most of them are under the age of 30. In early history it was “The Man” killing Blacks, now its Blacks killing Blacks. We have now become “The Man” that is not only killing us, but that is holding us back. Not only are we losing our Young Black men to senseless gun violence, but also to the jails. It is time to take a stand and say enough is enough.

Among the changes are a replaced playing surface, new lights, as well as updated drainage and sub-drainage systems.
“It’s outstanding for the players,” said Pittsburgh Perry’s coach Bill Gallagher. “It will eliminate all of that astro-turf burn and other problems that were associated with that old surface we had before.”

It’s over! People using social media to end relationships
Category: National Written by Courier Newsroom
For New Pittsburgh Courier
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN)—Once upon a time, when couples decided to end their relationship, they did so face-to-face. The break up rules and norms have somewhat changed. Today, some individuals are ending their relationships by using other, and arguably tactless, ways to say goodbye—social media.
