This has been out for the last three days. But here goes anyway. The news is that the once bastard child of American folk tradition has made its way into the hallowed halls of academia. And in conservative Arizona yet!! By the way, wasn't it at "liberal" Harvard that our Professor Cornel West ran afoul of the powers that be over this same folk tradition, causing the academic to change addresses to Princeton? Pio Pico, the first Mexican governor of California, is said to be, by historians, the offspring of a Mexican and a woman listed as "una mulata." Governor Pico then was at least part black, a fact that obviously didn't interfere with his elevation to that position. We must tentatively conclude, then, that the development of racism throughout California, and perhaps the entire West Coast, must have been brought into the state by the migrants of 1849, the 49ers, English speakers bringing with them dire cultural patterns to the Calfifornia African American. In fact, some accounts of the cultural makeup of San Diego and Los Angeles in pre English speaking days show reveal combinations of black, Mexican, and Spanish populations.
