I'm really glad to see this article written, it is something on my mind a lot since beginning to watch the show. The amount of designers that are people of color is always heartening, but to see how far they get continues to reaffirm this idea that fashion is held by these White gatekeepers. It really bothers me that talent like Sonjia Williams, Mondo Guerra, Samantha Black & Fabio Costa couldn't make it despite showing time and again that they have the creativity, the talent and the skills to be really big in the fashion industry. My only negative comment about your article was the Whitewashing of Nina Garcia. Nina is Latina, from Colombia. She isn't White. That is not to say that it isn't plenty of anti-Black racism in Colombia (as in Mexico and other Latin American countries), I just hope that with her background that she wouldn't be contributing to that. All and all, thank you so much for writing this piece!

I too have followed project runway since season one yet I am not surprised that there are no black contestants to win. Have we lost sight of the history of this country and what it was built on? RACISM. Bottom line..this is the United States of RAciSIM. This is a country that breeds White Supremacy. This is the same country that believes in White Skin privileged. Here in this country blacks were never to be SEEN as equals to whites (which is why black designers appear invisible) let alone better than whites.Even though this entire country is influenced by our fashion our music our language and our culture. Remember it was less that 60 years ago that we as black people were being lynched, set on fire, raped and murdered by the thousands. Less than 60 years ago we could not even shop for clothes at white stores. Now all of a sudden were surprised when a white person wins over an obviously more talented black person. REALLy? Read the Willie Lynch Letter it explains everything.
