LW: On Building a Bridge Too Far

Lil Wayne proved himself an engineer of cultural nihilism by building a bridge too far removed from his cultural self. But then again, he's not the first. Someone in the community not too long ago made some similar and disrespectful comments towards our beloved Rosa Parks. But I suspect that due to lack of inclusion of our history in public education, except for a month of "Back History," too many of our youths are building similar bridges too far. How many, for example, are familiar with the name Marian Anderson?

I'm wondering does anybody really think that the song will be any less offensive, or more positive with the one lyric taken out? I guess the present and future generations are free to fill their heads with all sorts of garbage, but whatever we do don't disrespect the past! When are we going to get it through our heads that self-respect and character are attributes that you have, or you don't, regardless of what you write in a song?

Classic Argument

"We must never forget" is the mantra of one diaspora. LW's unfortunate act goes a few steps beyond forgetting. However, it is a logical extension of the verbal and physical disrespect for women in music and entertainment that has relentlessly plagued this community. This article, however, treats LW's act as if it was a one-man decision. It most assuredly could not have been. No matter the color of the men (and women, too, most likely) behind the release, the entire team, from creative to production to marketing and distribution, is culpable. A far cry from "We must never forget," it appears that this community may be on the verge of needing the mantra, "We must relearn."
