Posh boutique offers enjoyable, relaxing experience

Loyalty to self, hard work and dedication pays off, are the beliefs of Desiree Scott, owner of Posh Nail Boutique in Homestead. “This business is 10 years in the making,” she said. “It’s my dream. I’ve always had high aspirations for myself and wanting to own a business is one,” said Scott, smiling, as she looked around the salon.

In the hub of an enterprising area located at 605 Amity St. between a tattoo parlor and restaurant at the railroad tracks at the entrance of the Waterfront Mall, Scott describes her establishment as a trendy, full service nail salon, tanning and waxing studio. She specializes in manicures and pedicures and offers tanning and waxing as added features. Tanning sessions are administered in 20-minute intervals. Waxing is done in small, medium and large body areas. “My goal is to assure that every one leaving the boutique—male, female, young and old—receive services beyond their expectations,” she said, adding that 15 percent of her clientele consist of men.

Money Matters...Who has your power?

(NNPA)—Three years ago, my brother had a stroke. He and his wife, who predeceased him, only had a simple will, leaving their assets to each other. While he was in the hospital it was a harrowing experience for his three daughters because he did not have a basic estate plan in place. Who had the power to make medical decisions for him?

Who would take care of his financial affairs and make the financial arrangements for medical procedures that he would need? Fortunately, my brother recovered from the stroke and he was able to put his basic estate plan in place.

Former Westinghouse grad named one of Houston’s top 25 women

HOUSTON, Texas—Former Pittsburgher Phyllis J. Bailey was named one of Houston’s Top 25 Women by Rolling Out Magazine.

Bailey and her family transferred to Houston in 1980 with Gulf Oil Corp.. Four years after that Chevron purchased Gulf Oil and Bailey went to work for the Four Seasons Hotel in Houston as assistant general manager. She formed relationships with some of the country’s most high profile and influential leaders, well-known entertainers and government officials. She developed and executed culturally diverse programs for employees and guests. In addition, Bailey cultivated extensive media contacts on a local, state and national level and planned and executed hotel-sponsored events. Later she was tapped to manage the Houston office of Winner Wagner and Associates, a crisis communications firm. After an 18-month stint, she decided to hang out her own shingle and opened 3B Resources Group Public Relations, LLC with former Houston Rocket Kenny Smith as her first client. “It is scary, stepping out on faith, but you never know what you can do until you believe and trust God’s power,” said Bailey.

The Carr Report...Is it wise to use a credit card to generate airline miles?

At a leadership conference someone told me to get a Capital One credit card for my business. She said when you place your orders, pay with the credit card and then right after that, pay your card off immediately online. She said the Capital One card gives you credit and you can get free airline tickets. This way I don’t have to pay for airfare for national conferences and leadership conferences. Is this a good idea or is it insane?
