There’s something timelessly heroic about two basketball warriors locked in man-to-man combat, each striving to be the last man standing. It’s an age-old struggle, rooted in our distant past. It is a test of will against an opponent on the path to immortality. Each era of the sport of basketball has seen some titanic battles unfold: “Magic” vs. Bird, Wilt vs. Russell, “Stormin’ Norman” Van Lier vs. “Pistol Pete” Maravich.
Dave “The Cobra” Parker, one of the greatest players to ever wear a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform, was honored before the June 27 game with the Tampa Bay Rays as part of the Pirates’ African American Heritage Weekend celebration. It was also Dave Parker Lumber Company Bobblehead Giveaway night. All fans in attendance received a Dave Parker bobblehead, courtesy of FSN.
The New York Yankees’ clipper ship docked at PNC Park confident that even in their current state of disrepair they would pillage some of the hidden bounty and buried treasure that the Pirates had hidden away. In the beginning of the series the Yankees played as if they and their mega salaries were related to “Uncle Sham” as opposed to being direct descendants of “Uncle Sam.”
MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—U.S. newspapers got a failing grade for gender diversity in their sports departments and a C for racial diversity, according to a study released June 26.
