Defender edges Courier to win prestigious Russwurm Award
MINNEAPOLIS (NNPA)—The Chicago Defender Newspaper, which at 104, is historically among the nation’s oldest and most influential Black-owned newspapers, has been awarded the prestigious Russwurm Award during this year’s NNPA Merit Awards Gala June 26. The Defender edged out its sister paper, the New Pittsburgh Courier, by a single point.

Supreme Court expected to take up Davis case
WASHINGTON (NNPA)—The fate of Troy Davis now rests in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court. The nation’s highest court was expected this week to consider hearing the case of Davis, a Georgia man convicted 20 years ago of killing a Savannah police officer. Davis’ execution has been stayed three times as lawyers ran through options to keep him alive, but his final appeal now rests with the Supreme Court.
