Letter To The Editor...Lease proposal serves commonwealth

Dear Editor:

Governor Ed Rendell has proposed a plan that does more than fix our roads and bridges, but addresses the crisis in transportation infrastructure in the state and moves the state forward—the lease of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The plan would not only provide funding for statewide transportation for the future, but also ensure diversity in management and operation of the road. Our understanding is that the agreement would require the operator and the commonwealth together to enhance the representation of diverse groups, and hold the operator accountable for advancing minority participation in entrepreneurial, procurement and management opportunities.

State Rep. Dwight Evans, of the LBC, has introduced legislation for the lease proposal and we feel this will serve the best interests of the commonwealth and all its citizens. For the past half-century, I have sought to serve the common good by advancing sustainable initiatives in social and economic development. Expanded entrepreneurial opportunities will go a long way toward empowering citizens and communities.

Considering today’s economic climate, now is the time for innovative ideas that expand opportunities in urban areas across this great nation. We are talking about $13 billion invested and reinvested within the state in transportation systems utilized in the state every day. Following the governor’s projections, more funding would be available for mass transit as well. The turnpike cannot be shipped elsewhere and jobs will stay where they are!

I rejoice at this public-private partnership with assured inclusiveness and just mandates. This represents the kind of leadership we need for a future that serves the common good.

Love embraces justice,
