Ike’s ‘Good Morning’ offers a new, one-of-a-kind sound

Rising artist Joy Ike harnesses a fresh sound in her music that’s eclectic enough to appeal to any music lover. Her debut full-length album, “Good Morning,” is a congenial mix of funky yet soft upbeat songs with a strong message and sultry ballads, driven by her excellent piano playing and versatile voice.

Ike is a humble creative genius, writing all of her poetic, inspirational songs. Each song has its own distinct style, and the lyrics capture a wide range of emotions. This unique songstress is certain to become an indie hit, and has lots of potential for mainstream success. In fact, Pittsburgh City Paper voted her the No. 2 “Best Solo Artist” last year.

Ike was born in Nigeria, and raised in Pittsburgh. She graduated in 2005 from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.A. in communications.

She brings a very literal meaning to the term newcomer; at 24 she’s been a musician for only three years. Don’t let that fool you, though. She sings like a pro and outshines many of the female acts out there with her prowess. Her talent extends far beyond her few years of experience. Her songs are catchy, but they also have substance. Their polished appeal doesn’t wear off over time like most Top 40 hits, either. Her deep lyricism is a satisfying break from some of the more shallow words emanating from songs on the radio.

Ike’s sound does contain hints of Anna Nalick, Corinne Bailey Rae, Heather Headley, India Arie, Feist and Ingrid Michaelson. Still, there’s no need to confuse her with these artists, because she’s in a class all her own. She combines the best of pop, neo-soul, R&B, jazz and indie into a spectacular album that’s an enjoyable listen. It does have its quirky moments, but that makes the songs all the more entertaining and real. Ike has something for everyone in this charming collection of well-mixed songs that are very down to earth.

With an irreplaceable authenticity, and heaps of artistic bliss, “Good Morning” dazzles with brilliance.
