Speak Out: Do Pittsburghers appreciates Negro League history?
The Josh Gibson Foundation hosted the third annual Negro League All-Star Gala recently. The event underscored the special connection of Pittsburgh and the Negro League through the men and women who played with the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords. The New Pittsburgh Courier asked some of the attendees “Do you feel Pittsburgh appreciates its Negro League history?” Here’s what they said:

TENE CROOM

Absolutely!  Pittsburgh appreciates the talent of the Negro League players with the two great teams —the Crawfords and the Grays.

Generally yes. The turnout tonight is an indication. Juan Marichal was great. Sean Gibson and the Josh Gibson Foundation did a great job.

Most definitely. The Pirates and Wende Torbert (Pirate’s director of diversity initiatives) are doing a wonderful job with the Legacy Square and in getting the message out to the young people.

It’s appreciated but it’s also a learning process. The more we learn about what they achieved, the more we’ll appreciate them when the greats come through.

I totally appreciate the Negro League history! But i don't appreciate the government changing the names of bridges at taxpayers' expense to memorialize the Homestaed Grays. I didn't need that to know these men made history!
