It’s not often you get a day like this in Pittsburgh. An afternoon getting up close and personal with Bill Nunn, the man who played the role of Radio Raheem in Spike Lee’s movie, “Do The Right Thing” and an evening with Alfre Woodard aka Betty Applewhite of “Desperate Housewives” fame.

On April 26, the day began at Westwood Golf Club in West Mifflin, Pa., where the Harmony Club of Homestead hosted their Mad Hatter’s Luncheon with very special guest Bill Nunn.
Nunn is a native of Pittsburgh and has returned to his hometown as director of the Conservancy of the Arts at Point Park University. Since Nunn left Pittsburgh 38 years ago, this Morehouse grad has appeared in scores of films including “Spiderman” 1, 2 and 3 and recently concluded appearances in staged productions of Pittsburgh playwright August Wilson’s 10 plays at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Nunn was the featured speaker for the afternoon and shared great stories about his break into the movie business. Few knew that he taught for 11 years and that he thought he would be a political science major until he took his first political science class.
On this day, the Harmony Club also presented three deserving youths—Aisha Henderson, Orlando Neal and Tasia Lynn Weems—with the 2008 Dorothy Lance-Vivian Weems Scholarship.
More than 300 ladies were stunning in beautiful hats and secret judges selected several ladies with the best “hattitude” in the place. The afternoon concluded with a riveting dance display by Ryan Mitchell and Yemisi Jones.
Last year the Harmony Club featured actress Tamara Tunie. This year it’s Bill Nunn. Who will top this next year?
With only a few hours to take a break, it was on to the Byham Theater in the Cultural District for the “Second Annual August Wilson Birthday Celebration: An Evening with Alfre Woodard.”
Both events had a common thread—KDKA’s Lynne Hayes Freeland hosted each. The evening was an intimate affair where the audience had the distinct pleasure of listening in on a very personal conversation between Woodard and Hayes Freeland.
A four-time Emmy Award winner, Woodard has also starred in a film by Spike Lee (“Crooklyn”) and the Hallmark Hall of Fame production of August Wilson’s play “The Piano Lesson.”
The evening concluded with a private reception at the Renaissance Hotel where Woodard took photos with anyone who asked and seemed to be right at home in the beautiful city of Pittsburgh.
