'Captivating the mind through different forms of expression'
With his barbershop, The Natural Choice, Charismatic Marketing, and being one of Pittsburgh’s premier DJ’s, Nate Mitchell recognizes the power of being an entrepreneur.
Mitchell is a Pittsburgh native whose family roots can be traced back to the late 1890’s, with his great, great, great grandfather moving to Pittsburgh from Virginia to work as a chef for H.J. Heinz. The belief that “the utmost regard and respect for the customer is the key to your success in any service oriented business,” guides his work.

Nate’s level of creativity has helped make The Natural Choice the premier natural hair salon in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Aside from The Natural Choice, Mitchell is also one of the hottest DJ’s in the tri-state area, rocking venues in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Mitchell is commonly referred to as Nate or DJ Nate Da Phat Barber. Nate has also seen great success at promoting parties and shows.
Mitchell has worked closely with local organizations such as the Bridgespotters Collective to produce some of the city’s most memorable events. With his knowledge of music and local popularity he created The Soul Garden.
The third Soul Garden show, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 30, has a lineup that includes Amel Larrieux, Donnie, W. Ellington Felton, a fashion show and a spoken word poetry segment hosted by Nathan James.
“We chose this venue for it’s intimate atmosphere and décor, which will allow several different forms of expression to take place simultaneously,” said Mitchell. “There will be other art mediums taking place in other rooms within the venue. It is only fitting that we use this opportunity not only to cultivate the spirit musically, but also to captivate the mind through different forms of expression.”
“The first Soul Garden, held on Jan. 26, 2002 at The Shadow Lounge, was a show with all live musicians and three groups that fell under the genres of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Soul and R&B,” he explained. “The show was orchestrated in less than a month’s time and was a huge success.”
Motivated by this accomplishment, he decided to host the Soul Garden II, which was held on Sept. 7, 2002 at The Backstage in Downtown. Since then Mitchell, with the help of the Praktis Web Design, has created a website for the event called www.soulgardenlive.com, which features all artists that performed at past shows and showcases some of their music as well.
