Inside Conditions…Supply and demand

I have grown quite weary of an almost inaudible whine, sort of like a silent dog whistle constantly being blown regarding African-Americans complaining about the depiction of Black athletes by the mainstream media. It is a known fact that almost any American of color who happens to hold a public occupation whether in politics, sports, entertainment, science or any other vocation that may invite public scrutiny or approval should know that besides having to contend with dual standards, there are multiple layers that have to be peeled away in order to even get to the existing standards.

Penn Relays a carnival on and off the track

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Penn Relays is all about excess, on the track and off. From the 7,000 high school runners, to the bevy of speedy college teams, to the number of NCAA champions and prospective Olympians, the excitement inside Franklin Field during the relays is rivaled only by the carnival atmosphere at the weekend-long party surrounding the venerable stadium.

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Safety Ryan Mundy was the first WVU defensive player selected Sunday, going to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 28th pick in the sixth round. He was the 194th player taken overall.
Steelers draft Oregon QB Dixon despite injury

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Dennis Dixon isn’t debating how high he would have gone in the NFL draft if he hadn’t torn up a knee. Or how much money the injury cost him. Or if he would have avoided going to a team that recently signed its starting quarterback to a $100 million contract.

Inside Conditions…Rough draft

You’re in the army now. Sorry, wrong kind of draft. All the speculation about the Steelers 2008 No. 1 draft selection ended early Saturday when Pittsburgh selected running back Rashard Mendenhall, who hails from the University of Illinois. Mendenhall is listed at 5-9-1/2 and weighs approximately 224 pounds. Although all indications are that Mendenhall was the best running back available, was he the best pick for the Black and Gold and is he the best fit for the Steelers offense? The team also drafted University of Texas wideout Limas Sneed in the second round which was probably a bit puzzling to everyone except QB Ben Roethlisberger.

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The defense was ahead of the offense throughout Pitt’s offseason practices. That all changed in the Panthers’ spring game.

Inside Conditions…The 'Ittsburgh Stenguins'

It was the pre-draft press gathering, oops, I meant press conference at Fort Rooney better known as the Pittsburgh Steelers practice facility and all the generals were huddled with their civilian “consultants” before the big day kicks off this upcoming weekend. Does Pittsburgh have any spare dollars to throw around and remain true to the “School of Noll” tradition and maybe pickup the best athlete available when it gets around to their turn to pick, (23rd) in the first round of the 2008 draft?
