ULISH CARTER

There has been a lot of talk and not much action on affordable housing during the past few years locally and nationally. So much so that I somehow got into a conversation with my daughter about housing that led to me talking to a few other young people about housing.

What I found out was that even though there are thousands of young people graduating from high school every year, and thousands more graduating from college, just in the Pittsburgh area alone, there are very few houses or apartments available that they can afford, which is why so many young adults are still living with their parents.

First we searched, or should I say she searched, online to find efficiency or one bedroom for $400 to $500. She found two that looked very ghetto. Then she searched for $500 to $600 efficiency or one bedroom. Bottom line was that the starting price for one bedroom was $650 to $700, and that didn’t include utilities. You know gas, electric, and water. Oh…these days’ cable and phone must also be included in utilities. So we are saying an estimated $1000 a month for housing.
