Liberty Bridge

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ State transportation authorities say a major bridge into downtown Pittsburgh closed after a construction fire will remain closed an extra week for repairs.

The Liberty Bridge has been closed since Sept. 2, and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said it will remain closed until Sept. 19.

The fire began on plastic pipes and a construction tarp as crews were cutting steel as part of an $80 million reconstruction project. Authorities said the flames damaged a steel beam critical to the stability of the bridge, which spans the Monongahela River.

PennDOT district executive Dan Cessna says contractors were able to quickly obtain steel for repairs but couldn’t prepare it in time, so some is being shipped to two other fabricators. The repairs require 150 pieces of fabricated steel and 400 bolts.
