Not only were nine of the 10 homicides in August Black males, seven ranged in age from 19 to 33 and the only three homicides in which there was a suspect arrested, all three were Black males.
The New Pittsburgh Courier lists the number of homicides each month with the names of the victims in an effort to bring awareness and motivate the community to bring a halt to this senseless killings of our young Black males because of street violence.
We have got to stop making excuses and work together to bring about a halt to our kids gunning down each other in the streets, because Black lives do matter.
August Homicides (10)
Aug. 1—Christopher Rodriguez, a 20-year-old Hispanic male was shot multiple times in his Allentown Apartment by his friend, Kenneth Murphy, a 20-year-old Black male who came there to purchase a gun. Murphy told police he accidentally shot Rodriguez while examining one of the guns. Murphy remains in the Allegheny County Jail.
Aug. 12—Jesse Poole, a 47-year-old Black male, was found by a neighbor lying on the stoop of a home on Rose Street in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. He had been shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
Aug. 13—Raekwon Epps, a 20-year-old Black male, was shot multiple times as he sat on a chair outside a Brushton Avenue building in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood. No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
Aug. 15—Gordon Johnson, a 33-year-old Black male, was found in a grassy area off Donson Way in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood next to a burning car he had recently purchased. He had been shot in the chest. No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
Aug. 19—Rico Smith, a 27-year-old Black male, was shot multiple times as he worked on a home in Wilmerding. County police said witnesses saw a Black male fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
