July 27 in Highland Park at the Lakepoint and Hawthorne groves, Felecia Harvey, coordinator of Black Pride Organization, held a celebration barbecue.
Black Pride is an organization for and about the Black LGBT community in Pittsburgh. It has been in the Pittsburgh community for some time, Harvey said, but has not always been received well. For this reason, the organization has not been able to secure the necessary funding it needs to sustain its place among the gay and lesbian community, she said.
Still they continue to strive for their place in the rainbow. Teaming along side the Black Pride Organization, was the Self Evident Truths Project who took head shot photos of those members of the LGBT community. SETP is a project geared towards awareness and accountability from the government. Tillet Wright, creater, and Tyler Renner, project manager, are attempting to travel around the country and take head shot photos of men and women of the LGBT communities from around the nation to create, sometime in the near future, a mural of faces to be hung on the steps of the capital building, as a statement of recognition to congress.
