Community Empowerment Association marks 20 years of service to children, families and the urban core offering violence prevention, after school programing, human and social services, community outreach, pre-employment and employment skills training. The organization uses Afrocentric strategies integrating culture, social identity to effectively and positively impact the community.

As its scope of services offered increased, CEA outgrew its original Point Breeze location on Lexington Avenue and, with the support of local foundations moved to a large facility more centrally located in Homewood at the former Holy Rosary School on Kelly Street across from the Homewood YMCA and the Homewood branch of the Community College of Allegheny County. CEA has developed for-profit business entities to assist with job-training and job readiness in the African-American community.

CEA commemorates their 20 years of growth and achievement with a year of activities, including a June 7 semi-formal dinner celebration. The event will be held from 5-8 p.m. at their Arts, Culture and Training Institute located at 7120 Kelly Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15208. The celebration will also serve as a “thank you” to several partners and volunteer who helped CEA develop and deliver its much need services to Homewood, East Hills, Wilkinsburg, Larimer, Lincoln-Lemington and beyond. They include Maurita Bradley, Shawn Carter, Melvin El, Keith Keys, Tisha Germany, Bob Mistick, Curtis Upsher, Evan Frazier, Shirlene Wheaton, Mary Savage, Castor Binion, Bob Marin, Justin Laing, Carmen Anderson, Austin Davis, Denise Graham, Keith McBroom, Chuck Frazier, John Lovelace, Luther Sewell, Carla Frost, Khalid Samad, Johnnie Comer, Chris Morrow and Father David Taylor.
