Nigerian Military Official Claims To Know Where The Missing Girls Are & We’re Not Buying It

nigerian-soldiersIt’s hard to believe that over 270 Nigerian girls who were abducted by Boko Haram (an Islamic militant group) from their school in Chibok, have been missing for a month. While there has been a video that surfaced, which allegedly showed 100 of the kidnapped Nigerian girls, there have been no leads in the whereabouts of these girls…until now. According to CNN, a top Nigerian military official believes he knows where the girls are, but he says the nation’s military will not use force to try to rescue them, a state news report said Monday.

Must Read: Why Those Nigerian Girls May Never Come Home

Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh said, “We cannot come and tell you the military secret, just leave us alone, we are working to get the girls back. Nobody should say Nigerian military does not know what it is doing; we can’t kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back. The good news for the parents of the girls is that we know where they are, but we cannot tell you.”

This sounds less like a hopeful admission and more like teasing. Badeh’s comments were reported by News Agency of Nigeria, a state-run news service. And Pentagon spokesman Adm. John Kirby told CNN U.S. officials were not able to confirm the report.

Remember when we initially heard about this devastating tragedy and it was being reported that the Nigerian military had found the hundreds of girls, only to embarrassingly retract their statement. What a weird thing to lie about, no? And now a man from that same Nigerian military is claiming that he knows where the girls are, but wants to be left alone. Does that mean they no longer need help locating and recovering the girls?

I understand the sensitivity of a missing persons case and this case is clearly much bigger than just one person, so stepping on eggshells is expected. I think it’s just a little premature to reveal to the media that you know where these girls are because it comes off as a tease, instead of hope.

It’s being reported that these girls have been sold for $12 as brides to Boko Haram members and therefore have converted to Islam. With villagers attempting to get their girls back on their own, because they don’t feel the Nigerian military has their backs, Boko Haram have been retaliating, killing innocent villagers. Their latest attack claimed the lives of 28 in three different villages.

Boko Haram is on a mission to overthrow the Nigeria government and create an Islamic state. They will obviously do whatever it takes to make that happen. My prayers and my heart are with the residents of Nigeria.

Hopefully Badeh is telling the truth by knowing the whereabouts of the girls, but only time will tell if they’re going to come home to safety.
